8/4/17 - This is a Lee-Enfield SMLE Mk.III*, manufactured in 1918. The iconic Lee-Enfield Rifle, the SMLE Mk.III, was first released at the start of 1907. It had several improved features that included a chamber adapted to fire .303 and newly designed handguards and magazines. During WWI, the rifle was found to be too complicated to manufacture at a rate that could meet demand, so the Mk.III* was introduced. It incorporated several changes, the most prominent of which were the deletion of the magazine cut-off mechanism and the long-range volley sights. The windage adjustment of the rear sight was also dispensed with, and the cocking piece was changed from a round knob to a serrated slab. This particular rifle is all original and matching. The wood has no major cracks or chips and the bore is excellent.
