7/25/18 - This is a rare calvalry carbine model 1896 Springfield rifle. The Model 1896 Carbine was manufactured in three serial number groups. The first group was 21,500 through 39,500. The second group was 61,000 through 75,000, which is the group from which this particular carbine came. The third and last group was 82,472 through 87,498. The receiver side plate is in good condition despite some normal patina and aging. Throughout the receiver and bolt assembly there's general surface wear and discoloration, but no deep rust or pitting. The photos are true to condition. The receiver is marked on the left side “MODEL 1896,” followed by “U.S./SPRINGFIELD,” followed by the serial number "69748". The barrel band and front sight are reddish/brown colored from patina, but this is not active rust - more like a light, normal surface wear. The wood is excellent and all original with no cracking or chips - all original condition. The wood faintly shows the original 1896 cartouche stamp. The bore is in great shape considering this weapon's age. We rate at a 7 out of 10 overall, with very strong rifling but some residue / corrosion within the grooves. Guaranteed original and authentic - antique rifle so no license required!
