5/5/22 - This is a nice example of a Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" Rifle, manufactured in 1892. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. This one has a rare experimental rod bayonet where the cleaning rod also serves as a bayonet. This one is not one of the original 2,000 made because it is not in the correct serial range, ~320000. So it was part of the later run. This gun is in fair condition. However, virtually all of the meatal parts are covered in spotty discoloration and dark brown patina. It has a faint military acceptance stamp on the right side of the stock and what looks like a rack number on the right side of the butt stock. The stock appears to have been sanded. The bore has strong rifling, but there are some areas of light oxidation here and there.
