4/27/23 - This is a rare repeating rifle made towards the end of the Civil War. The Triplett & Scott rifles and carbines were made to protect the supply lines of the Union army and issued to the Kentucky home guard. By the time these rifles were made, it was already at the end of the war. This surviving example is in excellent condition for its age. The stock has two cracks, one at the tang on the right side of the rifle, and the other behind the rear forestock screw on the bottom of the rifle. The latter is a minor surface issue, but the former is notably starting to separate slightly at the wrist. Also, one of the buttplate screws is missing. The barrel has little of its original finish left, however, the receiver still has some bluing remaining. The bore is bright with slight remains of erosion towards the muzzle. The hammer does not lock back every time, as the spring is loose and doesn’t catch it as well as the spring to close the magazine tube. Sling loop is sheered off on the bottom of the stock.
