9/23/17 - This is an original WW1 era production Winchester model 97 trench shotgun. This shotgun is all original configuration except for the sling, which is WW2 BOYT (1942 production). The bayonet is correct with a stretched leather scabbard and 1917 dated blade. The shotgun stock is high comb and in great condition. There are a few very minor nicks in the wood near the butt end, but this is common. One side of the stock seems to have a faded unit number that was once painted onto the wood. The wood hasn't been refinished or sanded. The metal parts are all original and excellent. There is no rust or pitting, but some normal patina and light dicoloration around the receiver and ejection port. The biggest flaw is on the top of the receiver where there is a brown area of finish loss. This is nothing too major though, not rust or pitting. The heat shield is correct configuration and excellent condition. Overall a VERY nice WW1 era (early) Winchester model 1897 shotgun.
