10/30/19 - This is a beautiful example of a rare and interesting Japanese 'Baby' Nambu rig, also known as the 'Type B'. Two things in particular make this listing somewhat unique from our previous Baby Nambu offerings. Firstly, this pistol serial is number 672, but very few examples of serials 1-500 are known or have been observed, so this is one of the earlier Baby Nambu serials you will encounter. Secondly, this pistol is accompanied by the extremely rare, early first variation holster, with hard molded clamshell flap. Per Derby's book on Japanese military handguns, fewer than 30 examples were known to exist in U.S. collections. These holsters were a 3/4 scale edition of the more familiar 'Papa' holster. These holsters were made with smooth cowhide leather, and have only been reported with early Tokyo Arsenal serials, such as the pistol listed above. Production on the first variation holster was discontinued some time prior to 1914, and the second type is then observed with a soft closure flap and usually made of a fine grade of pigskin. The pistol itself is all matching and original, including the grips and magazine. The bluing rates at about 97% with minor finish loss on the muzzle, grip safety and trigger guard. Mint bore and action is smooth. Serial dates the gun to about 1910-1911. The holster is in fantastic condition and is probably one of the finest such examples in the states. It has some minor cracking along the back and the seam, and there's a small area where the leather has slightly torn in the seam. Otherwise, the leather is in excellent shape, and the holster correctly has the Tokyo Arsenal proof inside, with Kanji that is typically basic inspection markings and occasionally even the year and month of manufacture, though we cannot translate it ourselves, unfortunately. We would be willing to sell the items separately, should a customer have interest in one or the other. Pistol would be priced at $4650, and holster at $2500.
