10/7/20 - This is a nice example of a Walther PPK that was presented as a gift by SA Leader Dr. Hellmuth to one of his comrades. Dr. Otto Hellmuth served in World War I and returned home after suffering in a gas attack. He then began studying dentistry and graduated from Freiburg and Wurzburg Zahnmedizin. In 1912 he enlisted in the Vokswehr-regiment (Free Corps) of Wurzburg which was founded to fight against the Bavarian government. Dr. Hellmuth was also the founder of the Kampfbundes "Frankenland" (revolutionary group) which was later incorporated into the SA and NSDAP. He became a member of the NSDAP in 1926 and became Gauleiter of Unterfranken (Lower Franconia) in 1928. For more information on Dr. Hellmuth see James Rankin's Walther Volume II, page 84. In 1932, Hellmuth was awarded by Hilter with the Coberg Badge which was one of the highest honors for the early Nazi Party leaders. This particular gun is matching and has retained about 85% of its original bluing. Generally, there is muzzle wear and wear on the high edges of the slide and tang. There is spotty wear along the length of both sides of the slide and on the front strap. There are areas of spotty oxidation and minor pitting throughout but most noticeable around the muzzle and right side of the slide. It comes with an excellent brown Walther grip (just a small hairline crack on either side) and brown finger extension magazine. The bore is excellent, shiny with strong rifling.
