2/22/18 - This is a WWII Japanese Naval officer Kai-Gunto combat (Samurai) sword. It is in excellent condition, in proper scabbard complete with officers grade brown sword tassel. Excellent condition sword with marked tang and beautiful untouched razor sharp blade. Early war example with blackened tsuba. Grip is wrapped with rayskin or sharkskin. Blade measures 29 inches from the guard forward to the tip. Beautiful original bright wartime finish (polish) with a clear wavy hamon (temper line) throughout. Tang is well marked. Tsuka (handle) is held to the tang with a single bamboo mekugi (pin). The menuki are of standard naval military design and depict three cherry blossoms. Fitted in correct original wooden scabbard that has no damage. All original gilt covered metal fittings are present and have nice finish. Push button scabbard release works smooth. Two suspension mounts on the kai-gunto navy scabbard. Mounts retain majority of their gilt. Entire rig shows light wear only, no damage. A beautiful WW2 Japanese Navy Kai-Gunto that will make a fine addition to a collection. Japanese Navy Swords are scarce most of them ended up on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
