5/5/20 - This is a terrific example of an early Type 38 rifle as produced by the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal in 1918. The barrel proof of the encircled triangle and letter "B" indicates a barrel stress test using a 10% overload. Interestingly, the "B" is believed to denote the supplier of the steel used to make the barrel; with the "B" likely corresponding to Gebrüder Böhler of Austria. Japan imported a large amount of European steel for weapons manufacture through 1914 before WWI began. This particular rifle has matching receiver, bolt and safety. Full mum on receiver with excellent blue on receiver and barrel. The stock has a Kanji marking on the underside and is in excellent condition aside from a notable chip and small, incomplete repair to this chip near the Kanji proof. Bore has strong rifling but frost throughout.
