5/5/21 - This is a very nice example of a US Model 1833 Dragoon Sabre and Scabbard Made by the N.P. Ames cutlery firm of Springfield, Massachusetts. The sword has a "United States" marking on the blade, indicating it was made for the Federal Government. It has "WS" military inspection proofs. It is also marked "MS", indicating it was issued to a Massachusetts enlisted man. Dated 1839. The US regiment of Dragoons organized on March 2, 1833 and a new pattern saber was authorized for their use. The new saber was similar to the British light cavalry saber of 1822. This Ames produced single-edged blade is slightly curved with a heavy rounded quill back which runs its entire length. The scabbard is also marked "MS" and has the same "WS" military inspection proofs. Overall, the sabre is in very nice condition. The blade is dull and has spotty oxidation throughout. A few very small areas of minor pitting. The handle has a few scuffs. The scabbard is excellent but has spotty brown patina throughout.
