9/28/21 - This is a nice example of a Gallagher M1860 Carbine. The rifle's designer, Mahlon J. Gallagher of Savannah, Georgia, leased the pattern to Philadelphia gun makers, Richardson & Overman. The Gallagher carbine was issued to Federal cavalry during the Civil War. This one is fully functional and the action is smooth. There is a "D" proof on the barrel, a "P" proof on the receiver, and "W" proofs on the small parts. No visible marking on the stock. The gun has lost most of its original finish with brown patina, splotchy discoloration, and spotty oxidation throughout. There are some areas of minor pitting along the underside of the gun. Very nice stock with minor scratches here and there. The bore has strong rifling with pin-pricking throughout.
