5/19/17 - This is a restoration piece but might be a good "place holder" until you can upgrade. Only 700 G date Navy's were ever issued and of course the majority are at the bottom of the Atlantic. This one falls in the proper serial range - D block (Jan Still's books cite several close to this serial number).  The marking on the front strap may look like a turkey but in fact this is how they looked and are unique to the G Date luger.  You can see an example cited in Axis Pistols. Therefore, while I acknowledge that this gun is a restoration piece, I believe it is an authentic example of a Navy issued gun.  The finish is about 96-97% and the parts are all matching with the exception of the grips.  They fit well and in excellent condition so I can only surmise that the gun was worn before restoration and therefore the worn grips did not "fit" the condition of the restored gun.  The gun also comes with 2 matching magazines.  However, unlike the Navy marking on the gun, I believe these magazines were made by the restorer.  He most likely numbered the mags to match and also added the Navy property marks.  They are period correct nickel magazines, but that is about all that is correct with these mags.  The bore is a little cloudy but very nice overall, and would rate a 7 or 8 out of 10.  An original G date Navy would sell in the 6k - 10k range.  The gun came to use in a beautiful custom made "suitcase" presentation case. These sell in the $400 range, but we have just kept them together for display purposes.
