Pre 1946 Walther Gem of a Gun

Hey guys! Today I have a pretty rare Walther PPK I want to show you as part of our educational series about Walthers PPs and PPKs from before 1946. This is one you probably never heard of. I love bringing stuff to you guys that you never heard of and I discovered this variation, it's actually not in any of the books or at least I ever heard about this variation.

The Polish Contract Variation

The Polish Contract Variation

We'll call it the Polish contract variation because if you take a look and right on the frame you see the G2 proof.

Now the first time somebody handed me one of these and said do you know what this mark is? And I said huh, never saw that before. I have no idea.

Well it turns out as I talked to other collector friends and searched around, we located five of these guns with the G2 proof. They all fall within the serial range of 222,000-226,000. So there's a serial range all in 1939 and there's five of them known to have the G2 proof. Now a little forensics tells me that the survival rate is estimated to be about 10%. In Poland, it certainly would be fairly low because first they were invaded by the Russians who took all their weapons and then they are invaded by the Germans who took all their weapons that was September of '39. This contract was from early in 1939 and it has the Polish G2 proof.

Where have You Seen this Proof Before?

Where have You Seen this Proof Before

Now where have you seen that proof before? Well, let's take a look at the famous polish Eagle Radom. There's a picture of the Polish eagle crest on a pre-war, pre-1939 polish eagle. And you can see here the D2 proof in an oval and then the magazine has the G2 proof in an oval which is distinctly for the Polish Radom.

Why in the World was Poland getting guns from Germany before getting Invaded?

Why in the World was Poland getting guns from Germany before getting Invaded

So why in the world who was Poland ordering PPKs from Germany who was about to invade them? Well that's one of the mysteries of this collecting hobby. I can't say for sure I could imagine with the Polish Radom in 9-millimeter in a medium-sized gun, there probably was a need for a hidden weapon.

Maybe officers kept smaller weapons. The higher-ranking officers liked the smaller calibers. We know that throughout all of the armies during the war that the office... They always say the smaller the weapon the higher the rank. Maybe this was for higher-level officers or security forces who like to keep them in a vest pocket something like that. But whatever the reason, I believe that about 50 were ordered, if I go with survival rates they ordered about 50 small caliber PPK from the Walther factory in 1939. And then everything fell apart because soon thereafter both Russia and Germany invaded Poland and World War II started. So this is one of the last contracts before the beginning of the war. It went to Poland probably a military officer. Very rare gun.

Check out the bell on our Youtube Channel!

Since I'm over the age of a millennial I'm learning new things about YouTube. Didn't even know about YouTube until recently but of course, the guys who work here who are millennials know all about the YouTube features.

But one thing I learned recently that might help you if you're near my age there is a notification bell. And if you click on that you'll be notified when we post a new video. And to a lot of my collector friends they're always asking me can you let me know when you do a new video. Just click that notification bell and you'll be notified.
