10/25/18 - This is a Pattern 53 rifle from the civil-war era. The rifle is clearly aged, but remains in solid condition for its age. Most collectors appreciate that the rifle is uncleaned and being presented "as-is". There are minor scratches and small chips on the wood, and the metal parts have brown discoloration as shown. The bore is fairly shiny with some light frosting. The original sling, while petrified and worn, is fully intact and with the firearm even after all the years. The firing mechanism is functional and the previous owner has fired this rifle - so verified fully functional. The Pattern 1853 is known as one of the first firearms to be fitted with a rifled barrel, which is why it is categorized as a rifle-musket. Around 900,000 Pattern 1853’s were imported into the U.S. for use during the American Civil War by both the North and the South. The rifle-musket was particularly desired among the ranks of the confederacy as most of the troops were otherwise equipped with the older smoothbore muskets of the day. Guaranteed original and authentic.
